Dhaka, Bangladesh—Gambling addiction, once considered a problem limited to certain groups, is now emerging as a significant social issue in Bangladesh. Despite strict laws prohibiting gambling, the increasing availability of online betting platforms is exposing citizens from all walks of life to its dangers.
The rise of digital technology and smartphone penetration has made online gambling more accessible, particularly among the youth. Social media platforms are flooded with advertisements for betting apps, often promising quick money and a luxurious lifestyle. What begins as a casual pastime frequently spirals into an addiction that disrupts lives and families.
A study conducted by a local research group revealed that 23% of individuals aged 18-35 have participated in online gambling at least once in the past year. The financial consequences are dire for many, with participants often borrowing money or using savings to place bets. In several cases, individuals have lost their life savings, leading to severe financial distress and even mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.
“Gambling addiction is not just about financial losses. It affects mental health, destroys relationships, and creates a ripple effect in society,” says Dr. Nazmul Haque, a psychologist specializing in addiction treatment. He emphasized that many victims are reluctant to seek help due to the stigma associated with gambling.
The legal framework in Bangladesh prohibits gambling under the Public Gambling Act of 1867. However, this law is outdated and lacks the provisions needed to combat online gambling. With many websites hosted overseas, authorities face significant challenges in enforcing regulations. Additionally, illicit physical gambling dens continue to operate discreetly in certain areas, compounding the problem.
Law enforcement officials have conducted raids on illegal gambling operations, but their efforts are often undermined by the emergence of new platforms. “It’s a cat-and-mouse game,” admitted a senior police officer. “Shutting down one operation often leads to the opening of another, particularly online.”
The societal impact of gambling is profound. Families are torn apart by financial strain, with many marriages ending in divorce. Community members report an increase in trust issues as borrowers often default on loans taken to support their gambling habits. Additionally, desperation to recover losses has driven some individuals to engage in criminal activities such as theft and fraud.
Experts are calling for a multi-pronged approach to address the issue. Suggestions include modernizing laws to regulate online platforms, launching public awareness campaigns, and establishing support systems for those affected by gambling addiction. The introduction of helplines and counseling centers could provide much-needed relief to victims.
Community leaders and NGOs are also stepping in. “We need a collaborative effort,” says Rahima Begum, a social worker in Dhaka. “From educating people about the dangers of gambling to offering alternative recreational activities, every step counts.”
As the gambling epidemic continues to spread, the urgency to act grows. Without comprehensive measures, the problem threatens to undermine not just individual lives but the social fabric of Bangladesh.
