Bhutan’s Ambitious Gelephu Mindfulness City: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Bhutan has announced an ambitious $100 billion project to develop the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), aiming to revitalize its economy by blending ecological sustainability with spiritual well-being. The GMC is envisioned as a low-rise metropolis featuring universities, hospitals, greenhouses, organic markets, and infrastructure powered entirely by hydroelectricity, with only electric vehicles permitted. This initiative seeks to redefine capitalism by integrating Bhutan’s cultural and environmental values, addressing challenges such as high youth unemployment and declining birth rates. While the project faces potential challenges, including resident displacement and geopolitical tensions, Bhutan remains committed to its philosophy of gross national happiness, striving to create a self-governing, environmentally responsible urban area that offers opportunities aligned with its cultural ethos
