Illegal gambling networks based in India are expanding into Bangladesh by leveraging UPI-linked wallets. Fraudsters create fake merchant IDs and offer “investment games” to Bangladeshi users via social media and messaging apps.
Once users deposit funds, the money is split across dozens of wallets and rerouted back to India. The process makes it nearly impossible for Bangladeshi authorities to trace the full money trail.
Several arrests have been made in Dhaka and Chattogram, where suspects were acting as local agents for Indian gambling sites. Authorities are requesting stronger cross-border fintech cooperation to combat this trend.
