A new hybrid fraud method is emerging in South Asia where scammers use voice phishing to convince victims to sign up for gambling apps. The caller pretends to be a customer support agent from a payment service or telecom provider.
Victims are told their accounts need verification and are guided to install a gambling app under the guise of testing a financial platform. Once installed, the scammer extracts wallet credentials and drains accounts.
Telecom providers are being urged to block known scam numbers. Meanwhile, cybersecurity experts recommend that all mobile users be educated about social engineering and its evolving forms.
