Gambling Addiction in Bangladesh Causes School Dropouts

Teachers and principals in Dhaka and Chattogram are reporting a disturbing trend: students dropping out of school due to gambling addiction. Many become obsessed with mobile betting apps, spending hours online and skipping classes.

Some children borrow money from classmates, steal from home, or even commit petty crimes to fund their addiction. Once expelled or failing academically, they fall further into isolation and financial stress.

Educators are now calling for national curriculum changes that include digital risk awareness and are urging schools to partner with mental health counselors.
