The Role of Technology in Exacerbating Gambling Problems in Bangladesh

The rapid growth of technology in Bangladesh has revolutionized many aspects of daily life, but it has also created new vulnerabilities. Among these is the rise in online gambling addiction, which has taken a significant toll on individuals and society.

Over the past decade, smartphones and affordable internet packages have made digital platforms more accessible, especially among the younger population. Unfortunately, this accessibility has also paved the way for online gambling platforms to target unsuspecting users. These platforms often use flashy advertisements, celebrity endorsements, and false success stories to lure people into betting.

“I started gambling on a mobile app when a friend shared a link promising easy money,” said Rafiq, a 24-year-old student in Chattogram. “At first, it felt like a game, but soon I couldn’t stop. I’ve lost more than I can count, including money borrowed from friends and family.”

Social media platforms and messaging apps have also become conduits for spreading gambling links, further exacerbating the problem. Illegal online betting websites hosted outside Bangladesh escape local jurisdiction, making them nearly impossible to regulate.

Experts warn that young people are the most vulnerable demographic. “They’re tech-savvy and curious, but they often don’t understand the risks involved,” said Dr. Ayesha Karim, a psychologist specializing in digital addiction. “The psychological thrill of winning—coupled with the shame of losing—creates a cycle that’s hard to break.”

Law enforcement agencies in Bangladesh have started cracking down on illegal gambling apps, but the pace of their growth outstrips enforcement efforts. Authorities have urged citizens to report suspicious apps and websites, but public awareness remains low.

Calls for action have grown louder in recent months. Stakeholders are urging the government to update existing laws to cover online gambling. Educational campaigns are also needed to inform young people about the risks associated with these platforms.

Community-driven efforts are beginning to emerge. NGOs and local organizations are working to provide digital literacy programs that teach individuals how to recognize and avoid online scams, including gambling. These programs emphasize the importance of informed decision-making in the digital age.

While the challenges are immense, the fight against online gambling is crucial. As technology continues to shape the future of Bangladesh, ensuring its safe and ethical use must remain a top priority.
