Bangladesh Faces Online Gambling Threats: 5 Million People at Risk

Online gambling has become a significant issue in Bangladesh, posing severe risks to the nation’s social, economic, and legal systems. Despite strict laws prohibiting all forms of gambling, the advent of the digital age has facilitated a massive surge in online gambling activities. According to State Minister for Postage, Telecommunication, and Information Technology, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, at least 5 million people in Bangladesh are involved in online gambling. This burgeoning trend is not only causing a substantial financial drain but also endangering the well-being of citizens, especially the youth and elderly retirees.
The Bangladesh government has proactively shut down numerous betting sites and online gambling platforms. However, online gambling continues to thrive through various covert channels. The situation is further complicated by the use of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and deep fake technology, which are used to create enticing advertisements featuring local and international celebrities. These ads, prominently displayed on social media platforms, lure unsuspecting individuals into the world of online gambling.
The government has initiated crackdowns on illegal gambling sites, shutting down numerous platforms. However, the persistent nature of these operations, often utilizing covert channels and sophisticated technologies, underscores the need for comprehensive strategies to combat online gambling fraud in Bangladesh.
